The Purpose of a Resume:

Your resume is a marketing tool. It needs to demonstrate:

  • That you are employable.
  • How you meet the job and the orgnization's requirement.
  • That you have the right qualifications and education.
  • That you have the right experience and skills.
  • That you have right level of professionalism for the job.  

How Long your Resume Should Be:

  • Consider a One-Page Resume If you have less than 10 years of experience  and you’re pursuing a radical career change,and your experience isn't relevant to your new goal. 
  • Consider a Two-Page Resume If you have 10 or more years of experience related to your goal and your field requires technical or engineering skills,and you need space to list and prove your technical knowledge.

Sequence of your resume should be:

Present the information on your resume in this order;

  • Contact details
  • Career Objective
  • List of key skills 
  • List of technical/software skills
  • Personal attributes/career overview
  • Educational qualifications
  • Employment history/work placements 
  • References/referees

Changing Your Resume for Each Application:

What Your Resume Should be Include:

  • Include all your contact information on your resume so employers can easily get in touch with you.
  • Include your full name, street address, city, state, and zip, home phone number, cell phone number, and email address.
  • A resume title is a brief phrase that highlights your value as a candidate.
  • Add an objective on your resume; it's important to match your resume objective to co-ordinate the job you are applying for.
  • A resume profile is a section of a resume that includes a brief summary of your skills, experiences and goals as they relate to a specific job.
  • The Career Summary section of a resume is an optional customized section of a resume that lists key achievements,skills, and experience relevant to the position for which you are applying.

What Your Resume Should NOT to be Include:

  • Do not label your resume "resume”. Don’t name your resume "resume" when you save the file. Use your name so the hiring manager will know whose resume it is at a glance. 
  • Do not write the date of your resume was created.
  • Do not include any personal information beyond your address, email, and phone number. Leave out your age,date of birth,sex, religion,political affiliation, social security number, driver's license number, and any credit card information.
  • Do not add Physical Characteristics Like a photograph, including your physical characteristics (height, weight, etc.)on a resume.
  • Do not list every job you have held on your resume. Generally, you only want to include positions you have held in the past 10 - 15 years,unless an earlier job strongly demonstrates your qualifications. Leave out any positions that are unrelated to the job for which you are applying unless it will leave gaps on your resume.
  • Do not include unrelated hobbies because most companies do not want to see your hobbies on your resume.
  • Do not want to establish a salary range before you have even been offered an interview. So, don't list your current salary or the salary you expect to earn at a new job.
  • Do not add anything negative about you or an employer.
  • Avoid Long descriptions and spelling and grammatical errors.

Reviewing Your Resume:

         Before you submit your resume to potential employers, step into the shoes of your readers and potential employers.Make sure you like what you see, and make sure your accomplishments, your tone, and your formatting choices convey a sense of competence and reliability.
